Biking & Kayaking Norway

A multi-sport adventure tour along the fjords
2008 Season

Norway

Biking Norway: What can we say about Norway? We were enchanted the moment we stepped off the plane, and our intoxication grew with each passing day. It truly deserves every laurel that has been laid upon its gentle shoulders, including the World's Most Peaceful Country, the World's Most Livable Country, and many others besides.

Like our home in Nova Scotia, Norway boasts a gorgeous and rugged coastline, but here the scenery is dominated by massive fjords and more than 50,000 islands. Norway is a land of extremes, perched unassumingly on top of the world. It's a place where the glaciers are a recent memory, where every accountant and taxi driver has Viking blood, where the sun never stops smiling in the summer.

Norwegians never take their natural surroundings for granted, and we're privileged to benefit from their dedication. Primeval, black forests stretch over mysterious granite mountains — mythological home to giants, trolls, and the giant wolf Fenrir— and viewing the world-famous fjords by boat is something every person should experience.

As we traveled the country designing this trip, traipsing along the Sognefjord, we felt like we had been transported in time. The beauty is simply stunning, and we had no problem understanding why National Geographic Travel considers Norway to be "The most beautiful and best preserved place in the world." But don't believe us. We really think you need to make this trip with Pedal and Sea Adventures to truly see Norway for yourself.

Our eight-day, multi-sport adventure tour begins in Bergen, a gateway to the land of fjords. Bergen is old, which the city proved by celebrating its first millennium in 1970. It's brimming with Nordic charm and a casual atmosphere. Over the next week we will travel along the Sognefjord by boat, speedboat, kayak, bike and then on foot, ending with a spectacular day of river rafting to Voss, an area known to adventurers around the world.

As always, our founder, Dana Gallant, has worked hard to find the best that Norway has to offer. We've found the best accommodations, and eaten at the best restaurants, so you can enjoy the impeccable service you've come to expect with Pedal and Sea— since so many of you reading this have traveled with us before. We've chosen to stay at the famous Fretheim Hotel in Flam for three nights so you can unpack, stay a while, and enjoy everything this area has to offer — including a railway tour past cascading waterfalls, a lovely Alpine picnic, and a gentle bike ride back to the Fretheim.

This is the Norway we can't wait to explore with you. Come play with us!

Biking Norway, Day one: When you arrive in Bergen, we'll take you to the FH Marin to get settled. If time permits, we'll take the tram up the mountain for its spectacular views over the fjords and Bergen's historic seaside setting. Our welcome dinner will be wonderful, as we're dining at the famous Bryggen Tracteursted. Lodging: First Hotels Marin.

Day two: We'll leave Bergen by ferry, and spend the next two nights in Balestrand. We'll be joining Island Hopping for their postal tour, cycling and catching ferries on our way to Balestrand and the Kviknes Hotel for two nights. It is a busy day, to be sure, but a beautiful one, and we'll get our first glimpse at the fjord that so inspired National Geographic Traveler. Lodgings: Kvikne's Hotel.

Day three: A local guide will take us on an alpine hike above the hotel, so we'll start the day with a view will take your breath away... maybe literally! But we hope you'll love the exercise, for you can reward yourself over dinner, for our chef tonight has a sure hand with local fish caught in the fjord. Get lots of sleep, however, because the adventure will be turned up a notch, starting tomorrow. Lodgings: Kvikne's Hotel.

Day four: Breakfast is hearty, and we'll then catch the ferry to Flam around noon — arriving just in time to catch the Fjord Safari speed boat, followed by a BBQ at a remote camp deep in the mists of time. The Fretheim Hotel will be our home for the next three nights. Lodging: Fretheim Hotel.

Day five: Today we take the world's most scenic (and steepest) train to Finse. After this incomparable journey, we mount our trusty steeds for a bike ride back to Flam, past waterfalls and gorges that will amaze and inspire. Our alpine lunch will be served at a quaint area hotel, featuring many local delicacies. Lodging: Fretheim Hotel.

Day six: Our bikes await, and we'll follow the fjord to one of Norway's most scenic areas, and that's saying something! We then return to Flam and, after lunch, trade our bikes for kayaks and explore the fjord. Lodging: Fretheim Hotel.

Day seven: We'll leave Flam to spend the rafting along the river enroute to Voss. Our final dinner together will be sweet and memorable, and we think you'll love talking about the week's adventures. Lodging: Fleischer Hotel.

Day eight: We'll return to Bergen today, although some of you might prefer take the train to Oslo for your return flight. We always feel a little sad at the end of a Pedal and Sea Adventure, but we're also happy to have made new friends, and to have reconnected with folks who've traveled with us before. We look forward to meeting again, and sharing the joys of the road.
