Nova Scotia's Lighthouse Route

A 6-day self-guided bike tour along the Atlantic Coast
2008 Season

Lighthouse Route

Biking Nova Scotia: Our self-guided tours have been designed for those who wish for the details to be looked after for them such as accommodations and route notes but wish to then cycle the week on their own time. Our Lighthouse Tour is the perfect choice for such a tour. We have you following Nova Scotia's South Shore from Halifax to beautiful White Point, where quaint fishing villages adorn the coast and their colorful fishing boats match the artistry of their owner’s homes.

Artists and nature lovers have been visiting these shores for years. As you cycle along the coast you will be accompanied by blue herons standing motionless in the shallows, seals bobbing up and down wondering whom the curious visitors are, and whales frolicking just off shore.

The South Shore of Nova Scotia also abounds with secluded beaches. Whenever the opportunity allows you should take the time to explore the beaches for any treasures that might have washed up on shore or just bask in the sunshine after a seaside picnic. At the end of each day you will relax in spectacular country inns

Day 1: Halifax to Hubbards (7 km; 1 mile equals 1.6 km)
There is a group pick-up at the Halifax airport around 3 p.m., or if you arrive earlier we’ll pick you up at your hotel in Halifax around 4 p.m. We drive by private van to a local inn near Hubbards and get settled in. You will be introduced to your bicycles and shown a scenic 7-kilometer loop of the area. Riding this loop will help you get acquainted with the bikes and prepare you for the week ahead. Should you need any bike adjustments or wish for us to install a custom seat or pedals, then this is a good time to accomplish these tasks. Lodgings: Hubbards Cove Inn or Surfside Inn.

Day two: (57 km)
After a wonderful breakfast you will set off on an awesome ride around the Aspotogan Peninsula. This quiet route will take you through quaint fishing villages and secluded beaches en route to Chester, a mecca for yachting on the coast, and your destination for the evening. Weather permitting you should plan on enjoying a seaside picnic along the ocean. Lodging: Mecklenburg Inn.

Day three: (54-70 km)
You leave this oceanside community and head off the beaten path by cycling the quiet country roads through Indian Point and Mahone Bay, on your way to Lunenburg — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — where you will hang your helmets for the next two evenings. First settled in 1753, the town has many historic buildings and homes. This shipbuilding community is also home to the famous Bluenose Schooner. Lodging: Mariner King Inn

Day four: (30 km with options for more)
After breakfast you will set off for yet another beautiful ride along the coast. Our destination is the little fishing community of Blue Rocks. We have planned a shorter day to allow for some time back in Lunenburg. For those wanting to get in a few more miles we suggest you continue down the Second Peninsula road. This is also a good day to add a wonderful morning of sea kayaking among Mahone Bay's 350 islands. Let us know when you book so we can make the necessary arrangements. Lodging: Mariner King Inn

Day five: (90-100 km)
Today you have the chance to complete a Canadian Century. You pair with your bicycles one last time as you make your way to White Point — your final destination. You will take a scenic ride on one of the last existing cable ferries to Lahave and pick up your lunch at the Lahave Bakery for later in the day. You will then continue on to Crescent Beach, Mill Village, and Liverpool before settling in to your inn for the night. Time permitting, take a stroll down the beach or have a quick dip before dinner. Lodging: Quarterdeck, Summerville or Whitepoint Lodge.

Day six:
This morning we suggest that you enjoy the spectacular setting of your beachside resort before our van picks you up around 10 am to shuttle back to Halifax or the Halifax Airport. The ride will take just under two hours giving us plenty of time to help you plan for your next visit back to Nova Scotia, or one of our other remarkable tours. After all, about 75 % of our guests do come back!
